Novosibirsk-born violinist Vadim Repin, 39, has been made a Chevalier of the French Order of Arts and Letters. The honour was conferred at the weekend following a recital in the Salle Pleyel, Paris, by Laurent Bayle, director-general of the Cité de la Musique, on behalf of the French Minister of Culture. Bayle paid tribute to Repin’s unique sound, his dedication and artistry, and his fidelity to the high standards of musicianship set by two of his greatest mentors, Mstislav Rostropovich and Yehudi Menuhin, both members of the same distinguished French Order during their lifetimes. Vadim Repin made his French debut at the age of 13, and has performed in France regularly for over a quarter of a century. He started to play the violin at the age of five and six months later had his first stage performance. At eleven he won the gold medal in all age categories in the Wienawski Competition and gave his recital debuts in Moscow and St Petersburg. In 1985 at fourteen he made his debuts in Tokyo, Munich, Berlin, Helsinki; a year later in Carnegie Hall. Two years later Vadim Repin was the youngest ever winner of the most prestigious and demanding violin competition in the world, the Reine Elisabeth Concours. Since then he has performed with all the world’s greatest orchestras and conductors. Last season featured concerts with Muti in New York, with Thielemann in Tokyo, with Chailly in Leipzig, a tour of Australia with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Vladimir Jurowski, and the unanimously acclaimed première of a violin concerto written for him by James MacMillan and performed with the London Symphony Orchestra and Valery Gergiev. Earlier this year he was awarded the Victoire d’Honneur, the French recording industry’s most prestigious musical award for a lifetime’s dedication to music.

Организаторы рассказали о XIV конкурсе Чайковского

Вчера в Москве состоялся брифинг по итогам заседания оргкомитета Международного конкурса имени Чайковского. Главной новостью стало то, что 14-й фестиваль, который пройдет с 14 июня по 2 июля 2011 года, состоится сразу в двух городах -- в Москве и Санкт-Петербурге. Связано это с реконструкцией Большого зала Московской консерватории, что, по словам председателя оргкомитета форума Валерия Гергиева, является «событием очень важным и радостным, но и одновременно тревожным». С уверенностью обещать, что зал будет открыт к следующему лету, никто не может, а потому решено перестраховаться. Тем более Гергиева в опасениях поддержал директор департамента государственной поддержки искусства, народного творчества и международных связей Минкультуры РФ Алексей Шалашов - маэстро сослался на его слова о том, что пока денег на реконструкцию Большого зала нет.


Гергиев призвал не искать никаких других причин в подключении к конкурсу Петербурга. «Никакой войны за конкурс не ведется. Ни о какой краже конкурса речи быть не может», -- заверил он. Просто проведение столь важного мероприятия не в Большом зале Консерватории не отвечает ни его духу, ни уровню, а в Петербурге есть филармония и концертный зал Мариинского театра. Потому пока решено, что вокальные и скрипичные конкурсы пройдут в городе на Неве, а фортепианные и виолончельные -- в Москве. Открытие конкурса пройдет в столице.


В случае если реконструкция все же будет завершена к началу конкурса (по плану предполагалось закончить все ремонтные работы именно к этому сроку), безусловно, он пройдет в Москве. Однако верит в это маэстро с большим трудом, особенно принимая в расчет ситуацию с затянувшимся строительством второй сцены Мариинки.


В жюри конкурсов -- а это фортепьяно, скрипка, виолончель, сольное пение -- войдут крупнейшие современные исполнители. Так, среди скрипачей Гергиев назвал Вадима Репина, Гидона Кремера, Максима Венгерова, Виктора Третьякова, Юрия Башмета, Владимира Спивакова. В жюри пианистов приглашены Михаил Плетнев, Денис Мацуев, Марта Аргерих из Аргентины. Почетным председателем жюри вокалистов станет Пласидо Доминго. Также в судейскую коллегию войдут Елена Образцова и Владимир Атлантов, испанская певица Тереза Берганца, немецкая сопрано Анья Силья.


Выступления участников конкурса будут транслироваться в Интернете, а гала-концерты победителей, которые пройдут в Москве и Санкт-Петербурге, покажет не только российское, но и западное телевидение. Кроме того, лауреатам помогут записать собственные СD.

Vadim Repin will premiere James MacMillan's violin concerto on the 12th of May in London Barbican Centre, with the LSO conducted by Valey Gergiev.

The first movement begins with a short, punchy refrain motive, which kicks of a fast, jerky principal theme on solo violin. This is followed fairly swiftly by the other main idea – a high, floating singing line, with murmuring accompaniment. These three main elements form the main thrust of development thereafter. However, the music takes a significant detour into an energetic Scottish reel, before the natural development is resumed and concluded.

The second movement begins with a simple, expressive melody on oboe, which is then taken up by the strings as the solo violin moves into a highly embellished counter-material. This becomes the main characteristic of the soloist’s activity in this central movement. The other main accompaniment idea is a series of simple chords, all of different lengths, fitted in to a pliable dyadic rhythm. As the two themes are varied in a series of episodes, the music again takes an unexpected shift – where the solo part is marked semplice, child-like, folksy, dancing. Based on a hazy, remembered amalgam of old Irish tunes, this section is a memory of childhood. These main elements are developed and subsequently juxtaposed, but it is this simple melody that has the last word, in a virtuosic passage for the soloist.

The third movement is a combination of the two concepts in the earlier movements; song, and dance. The music has the physical energy of the first, but some of the singing quality of the second, while introducing a new feeling of burlesque. There is some spoken material too (in German). A series of metric modulations take the music into new territory with heightened vigour, and with a growing sense of abandon. The middle section is a waltz based on the lyrical, plainsong-inflected slow material from earlier in the piece. A final detour, at the resumed speech, takes the music to a tragic outburst, leading to an unaccompanied cadenza for the soloist. A brief codetta brings the work to a full stop. The work is dedicated to Vadim Repin and in memoriam Ellen MacMillan (1935- 2008).

He also gave a masterclass at Novosibirsk Conservatory.

We are very excited to announce the addition of another guest masterclass at the String Academy with world-famous violinist Vadim Repin, to be held on March 6, 2010, at the UWM Peck School of the Arts Recital Hall from 16:30-18:00.
Vadim Repin will be in town to perform the sublime Beethoven Violin Concerto with the Milwaukee Symphony on March 5th, 6th, and 7th.
