The new double violin concerto by Mark-Anthony Turnage,
Shadow Walker, is premiered and toured by the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic in
October, with Vadim Repin and Daniel Hope as soloists.
Mark-Anthony Turnage's new double violin concerto, Shadow
Walker, is premiered by soloists Vadim Repin and Daniel Hope in Istanbul on 19
October with the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra under Sascha Goetzel.
This first performance is followed by a European tour visiting the Essen
Philharmonie (20 October), Gallus Hall in Ljubljana (21 October), the
Musikverein in Vienna (23 October) and the Maag Halle in Zürich (25 October).
Shadow Walker is jointly commissioned by Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic
Orchestra, Philharmonie Essen and the Trans-Siberian Art Festival which
includes events in Vadim Repin's native city of Novossibirsk.
The new 25-minute work is dedicated to artist Mark
Wallinger, who Turnage collaborated with on his ballets Trespass and Undance.
The title Shadow Walker is drawn from a Wallinger video in which the artist
films his shadow as he walks along Shaftesbury Avenue in London, exploring
themes of identity and replicated imaging. The disembodied shadow takes on its
own life in relation to the public on the streets, allowing the artist to
experience the city as a flaneur behind a mask of anonymity. Turnage's work
also references Wallinger's series of Id Paintings, life-size action art images
whose bilateral symmetry resembles the two halves of the human body.
Shadow Walker is cast in four movements, Fast-Slow-Fast-Slow,
with the third movement taking the form of a scherzo. A wide range of
contrapuntal techniques are employed by Turnage, from general imitation and
echo, to strict canon - such as the opening of the fourth movement starting
with the two soloists in turn, and proliferating through the strings to build a
rhythmically and harmonically complex texture. Mirror canon also appears, which
is more closely related to the symmetrical techniques in Wallinger's Id
Paintings.

Vadim Repin received the Lakshminarayana International Award in January 2017
The
Lakshminarayana International Award was instituted in the year 1997 by the
Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival. It is awarded to individuals who have
made momentous contributions to their respective artistic domains. Each awardee
is a legend in his/her own right.
The
first award in 1997 was given to Lord Yehudi Menuhin, and was presented to him
by the President of India His Excellency K.R. Narayanan. Subsequently, the
award has been presented to eminent artists, creative geniuses and living
legends.
The award carries with it a
specially commissioned unique Tanjore painting of Lord Ganesha playing the
violin (as a tribute to Professor V. Lakshminarayana). Lord Ganesha in the
Hindu pantheon is the first God one prays to, in order to remove obstacles. Tanjore
painting is a specialized art form from the Tanjore region of Tamil Nadu. This
form of painting incorporates gold leaf work and semi-precious gems. Each
painting is a specially commissioned work of art.

Barbican Centre on the 12th of May 2010.
The violin concerto was co-commissioned
by the London Symphony Orchestra, the Zaterdag Matinee in Amsterdam, the
Philadelphia Orchestra and the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris.

A
live Philharmonia Orchestra concert screening of the 1927 silent film Love,
featuring the world premiere of a new score.
The
Philharmonia Orchestra provides live accompaniment to a screening of Love,
featuring virtuoso violinist Vadim Repin and conducted by Frank Strobel.
Aphrodite
Raickopoulou has written a new score for this classic silent film, which is
based on Tolstoy's novel Anna Karenina. The score was written especially
for the renowned violinist Vadim Repin, whom Yehudi Menuhin described as 'the
best violinist I have ever heard'.
Made
in 1927 by director Edmund Goulding, Love starred the most celebrated
screen couple of the era: Greta Garbo and John Gilbert. The New York Times
motion picture critic Mordaunt Hall described Greta Garbo, in this role, as 'a
blonde Mona Lisa' and wrote that she 'outshines any other performance she has
given to the screen'.
In
2012, Aphrodite Raickopoulou's score for Faustwas premiered in Royal
Festival Hall by Carmen Zgouras Special Entertainment.
'Raickopoulou's
music mirrored the film's fantastical qualities with intensely-coloured string
passages and some Wagner-esque brass... [her] sweepingly symphonic writing
amplified the dramatic turbulence of Murnau's movie with a passion that would
surely have impressed the director himself.' (The Arts Desk on Faust)

Vadim Repin performed Krennikov VC1 with Mariinsky Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev, on the occasion of Tikhon Krennikov 100th Anniversary concert.
«Московские окна», «Колыбельная Светланы», «Что так сердце растревожено»… Эти песни помнят и поют, порой забывая, что их автор – Тихон Николаевич Хренников. Сегодня исполняется 100 лет со дня рождения выдающегося композитора. Памяти мастера три масштабных концерта дал маэстро Валерий Гергиев. Первый – в Петербурге. Второй – на родине Хренникова, в Ельце. Вечер в столичном зале Чайковского стал кульминацией этого музыкального приношения. Рассказывают «Новости культуры».
Ради этого вечера в зале Чайковского Вадим Репин вспомнил юношеский скрипичный концерт Тихона Хренникова, который не играл много лет.
Когда-то, очень давно, юного Вадима Репина Тихон Хренников вывел за руку на сцену Большого зала консерватории. Это стало началом теплых до родственности дружеских отношений.
«Вспоминаю те годы, когда часто вместе путешествовали во многие города, общались, – говорит Вадим Репин. – Этот концерт – часть меня, в каком-то смысле. Мне уже не 16 лет, но удовольствие огромнейшее».
