The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra - a cultural icon of Israel and one of the greatest classical ensembles in the world - celebrated its 75th Birthday on December 26th, 2011 together with three outstanding soloists of the younger generation Julian Rachlin, Evgeny Kissin and Vadim Repin. The concert took place in the spectacular Hangar 11 at the harbor in Tel Aviv. Zubin Mehta conducted a spectacular programme of Saint-Saëns, Bach, Chopin, Chausson and Beethoven.

The film Coming Home by János Darvas portrays the orchestra and tells of its moving history, which is both a reflection of the history of Israel and the fate of the Jews in the 20th Century. With texts from memoirs, with material from radio interviews, home movies and photos from the orchestras archives, as well as from private collections, the film will not only tells the story of the orchestra, but draws parallels to the fates of many individuals. Historical footage brings the 75-year history of the orchestra to life in concerts with Arturo Toscanini, Arthur Rubinstein, Leonard Bernstein, Isaac Stern, Zubin Mehta, Daniel Barenboim and Itzhak Perlman. Interviews with orchestra members from the early years weave through talks with musicians that joined later, and with current orchestra members. Moreover, Zubin Mehta, Daniel Barenboim, Itzhak Perlman and Pinkas Zukerman have their say. We also get the opportunity to watch the Israel Philharmonic in rehearsals, concerts and tours.

Winners 2011

The most important Dutch prize for classical Cds, the Edison Klassiek, was awarded to Vadim Repin and Nikolai Lugansky for their Violin Sonatas CD on the 31st of May 2011.

2011 BBC Music Magazine Awards

Violinist Vadim Repin and pianist Nikolai Lugansky won the Chamber Award for their dazzling performances of Sonatas by Janáček, Grieg and Franck, their first recording together.

Passé de l’immensité sibérienne à la gloire planétaire, le violoniste virtuose Vadim Repin nous emmène dans un monde d’harmonies magiques.

Depuis Irkoutsk sur le lac Baïkal jusqu’à Berlin, Bruxelles, Paris et Dijon, nous suivons l’artiste. En plus de le voir jouer en soliste avec les plus grands orchestres, on l’entend aussi dans des trésors de la musique de chambre. Presque en marge, on y apprend plus sur l’itinéraire personnel de cet artiste d’exception, considéré par Yehudi Menuhin comme le violoniste le plus parfait au monde.

Le virtuose Vadim Repin a suivi les cours du génial professeur de violon Zakhar Bron à Novosibirsk, loin de l’usine à talents moscovite. Très tôt destiné et préparé à une carrière de soliste, il a été formé selon la tradition de « l’école russe ».

Le talent du jeune Vadim Repin ne fait aucun doute : à onze ans, il remporte le Concours Wieniawski en Pologne et à dix sept ans, il repart avec le premier prix de l’ardu Concours Reine Elisabeth de Bruxelles. Sa carrière internationale peut alors commencer. Aujourd’hui, il est l’un des violonistes les plus demandés au monde.

Sa discipline et sa virtuosité athlétique lui permettent un jeu qui surprend par sa légèreté ainsi qu’une sonorité lumineuse et transparente qui n’en finit pas de fasciner. Pour atteindre l’Olympe des violonistes, Vadim Repin a bénéficié, en plus de l’enseignement de son professeur Zakhar Bron, du soutien de Yehudi Menuhin et de la manager de ce dernier, Eleanor Hope. Depuis son succès à Bruxelles, la mère du violoniste britannique Daniel Hope a entouré le jeune Vadim Repin de sa sollicitude.

Après des années passées à Hambourg et à Monaco, le virtuose du violon, maintenant âgé de 39 ans, partage son temps entre Vienne et Moscou. Malgré sa gloire planétaire, il est resté humble, plein d’humour et sans artifices. Marqué par une enfance et une adolescence studieuses en Sibérie, la vie occidentale a permis à Vadim Repin de devenir un musicien, un artiste et un homme pour qui la discipline, le plaisir de jouer et la sensualité de l’expérience sonore sont indissociables
